Last month, a number of new (free to play) games signed up for our WGF topsites list. One of these games, Crime Valley, has moved swiftly in an effort to get their members to vote for them. Thanks to this effort, they've managed to climb the rankings untill reaching top position.

That's why we think it would make sense to look a bit closer to Crime Valley, as the Jan'10 Game of the Month.

First things first, so we need to figure out what CrimeValley is exactly. So, we registered an account, and started to look around, in the meantime harrassing the admins to get some information from them. In their view,Cime Valley is "a diverse community built around a crime based RPG".

Note how the admin who answered this question phrased his answer: they consider it a community around an RPG. Not a game, which happens to have a community. It's not common for game owners to put the community aspect before the game aspect, so this is promising something new.

Next, we asked who is behind the game. It turned out that the game is made by three gamers, who "became bored with other multi player games currently established and some of the politics that have come to ruin their game play".

Setting

Next, we look at the setting of CrimeValley.

Having your game listed as "Featured Game" gives you great exposure. Your link will be visible on each page of the main section of www.webgamefavorites.com

In total, there will be 6 positions available, of which the top one will be reserved for the game which scored highest in the last months rankings.

The remaining 5 are available for rent. For €10, you will get your link listed here for 5 months. Each month, the game which is at the bottom of the list is removed, and a new game appears at the top of the list.

According to this article in The Telegraph, Joe Chedburn has made his first million at the age of 21 by building and running his game Torn.

Torn is using the model which is standard for php-based games (and others): free to play, with premium bonusses. The article states that the game now makes a stunning fifty-thousand pounds each month. "I suppose when I was younger my parents used to tell me off for spending too much time on my computer but they are quite happy with what I am doing now" Joe is quoted.

We hope that many more game-owners will manage to strike the jackpot, and we hope that we at Webgamefavorites can help you with it.

An update about WGF PDF Print E-mail

First of all, allow me to deeply apologize to you. It has been over a half year since you signed up, expecting a lot more from www.webgamefavorites.com than we have been able to deliver so far.

Sadly, we -the team of WGF- have also been struck by the economic downturn, resulting in a lot of stress and less time to dedicate to the project. Some of us have even been forced to stop working on it entirely.

As a result, no visible progress could be made since september '09. I am deeply and truly sorry about this fact.

Since we realized that our original ambitions would take too long to complete to be worthwhile, we have decided to change our approach. As a result, we have implemented a new (Open Source) ranking system.
The new system offers all the major benefits that our former -under development- system offers:  room for a (short) description, obviously a free link and rankings, but it also offers you the possibility to upload a free banner.

In our original plans, the upload of a banner would have been a paid feature. Under our new plans, this is entirely free of charge.

Please take a moment to register your game: http://webgamefavorites.com/topsites/index.php?a=join and put the code provided anywhere on your site.

I am hoping that this change of strategy will be a great new start for our site.
