It has been a few months since we had our last Game of the Month. Actually, this was exactly the reason we changed from "average counting" to "monthly counts". This month, Avalon is the convincing winner, topping the rankings with a few 100 votes more than the number 2 in the list.
So, what makes this game so special? We signed up to have a look. Signin up was pretty straight-forward, without any bumps, so we were inside the game within a few seconds, receiving a piece of clothing, a stick and some starter items. Cool! Freebies! The forums, always the first place we go, are nicely visited. But they are not as busy as those in other games we've seen. In some subforums, the latest post was made a few days ago. Of course, this says nothing about the game, but we believe that an active community is what makes a "good" game a "great" game!

A few days ago, we changed the ranking order for our Webgamefavorites Rankings List. The reason for this change is that we noticed that with the old ranking method (based on the average votes of all past months) resulted in a very stagnant ranking. One site, which had one particulary good month, kept it's positions for months afterwards, despite the fact that other sites had already had more votes per month for the last few months. The WGF discussed this, and decided that it would not be fair to continue ranking in this way. After all: if you have a site, and you put in a good effort, you want to see it reflected in the months rankings. That is why we now order the webgames based on the number of votes they got in the current month. This should provide a better reflection of the actual positions of webgames.

Last month, a number of new (free to play) games signed up for our WGF topsites list. One of these games, Crime Valley, has moved swiftly in an effort to get their members to vote for them. Thanks to this effort, they've managed to climb the rankings untill reaching top position. That's why we think it would make sense to look a bit closer to Crime Valley, as the Jan'10 Game of the Month. First things first, so we need to figure out what CrimeValley is exactly. So, we registered an account, and started to look around, in the meantime harrassing the admins to get some information from them. In their view,Cime Valley is "a diverse community built around a crime based RPG". Note how the admin who answered this question phrased his answer: they consider it a community around an RPG. Not a game, which happens to have a community. It's not common for game owners to put the community aspect before the game aspect, so this is promising something new. Next, we asked who is behind the game. It turned out that the game is made by three gamers, who "became bored with other multi player games currently established and some of the politics that have come to ruin their game play". SettingNext, we look at the setting of CrimeValley.

This month, we sign up on Deadly Planet, the Game of the Month'10. Deadly Planet staff describe the game as a Mafia/Mobsters type game, with a very active community. It is set in a world of violence, with cities that lay in ruins, and the survivors fighting for their position in the pecking order.

Having your game listed as "Featured Game" gives you great exposure. Your link will be visible on each page of the main section of www.webgamefavorites.com In total, there will be 6 positions available, of which the top one will be reserved for the game which scored highest in the last months rankings. The remaining 5 are available for rent. For €10, you will get your link listed here for 5 months. Each month, the game which is at the bottom of the list is removed, and a new game appears at the top of the list.
